Nature Is Still My Greatest Teacher

Last week, I returned from a heart-opening yoga retreat in the Cook Islands—an experience that left me nourished, grounded, and deeply inspired.

There were 17 yogis in total, all drawn to the island for movement meditation, circle, stillness, and soul. My intention going in was clear: to reset, replenish, and rejuvenate myself so I can continue showing up as a heart-centred psychologist. And what better teacher for that than nature?

We swam with turtles in the Avaroa passage, watched vibrant tropical fish weave through coral gardens, and floated in warm turquoise lagoons under endless sky. There were chickens and roosters wherever you looked (even at the airport), blossoms spilling from trees, jagged mountains rising in stillness behind us. The raw, unfiltered beauty of Rarotongan life moved something in me.

Amid the slow pace and sensory richness, I felt an old truth resurface:

Nature is not just something to visit—it’s something to remember.

Tool #6 from The Art of Wellness ToolkitNature is Nurture

This week’s focus from the Toolkit reminds us how simply being in nature can regulate the nervous system, open the senses, and reconnect us to our natural rhythms.

When I speak about healing in the Toolkit, I often refer to our senses as doorways to presence. And that’s exactly what the island offered me.

Here’s what nature reminded me:

  • Slowing down is not a luxury—it’s a necessity
  • Natural beauty recalibrates your nervous system
  • Movement feels more intuitive when immersed in colour, sound, and softness
  • Simplicity creates space for insight
  • Nature models cycles, not perfection—and we can too

Your Practice: A 10-Minute Nature Refill

This is your invitation to reconnect in a small, meaningful way.

Set aside 10 minutes and:

  • Sit under a tree
  • Walk barefoot on grass or sand
  • Lie down and breathe in the air
  • Listen deeply—what do you hear, smell, feel?
  • Ask: What is nature reflecting back to me today?

Let the earth become your co-regulator. Let it hold space for rest, clarity, and creativity.

🐢 Protecting Avaroa: A Call to Action

Swimming with turtles in the Avaroa Passage was a soul-stirring experience—and a reminder of how vital it is to protect these sacred marine ecosystems. Sadly, the passage is under threat from increasing tourism and motorised watercraft that disrupt the fragile balance of marine life.

A growing movement is calling for Avaroa to be protected as a dedicated marine reserve, with a ban on powered watercraft to safeguard turtles, coral, and the spiritual significance of the area.
